A representative of the pro-democracy TakeItBack Movement confirmed the release on Wednesday evening, stating that their intervention played a key role. The source clarified that no bail money was paid, but the group had to sign an undertaking to inform the police before staging any future protests.
“We have just secured his release after he was moved to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID). Yes, we signed an agreement to notify them before holding any protest,” the source told SaharaReporters.
Reports indicate that Saatah was arrested in Port Harcourt on Tuesday and detained at the SCID. His detention followed a police invitation to NDC spokesperson Mudiaga Ogboru over his statements criticizing Tinubu’s emergency rule and urging Niger Delta residents to protest against it.
A source revealed that instead of waiting for Ogboru’s response to the police invitation, authorities chose to detain the NDC president instead.
“The police initially invited Ogboru due to his remarks against the emergency rule and his call for the people to express their dissent. But rather than wait for him, they arrested the NDC president, who has been in custody since yesterday,” the source explained.
Confirming the incident, Ogboru disclosed that he had received two separate invitations—one from the Lagos State Police Command and another from the Rivers State Police Command.
“Actually, I got two different invitations—one from the Lagos Police Command and another from Rivers. Since they couldn’t find me, they arrested our president in Port Harcourt,” he said.
A copy of the police invitation letter obtained by SaharaReporters read:
“You are invited to see the Officer in charge of SID at the above-named Police Station/Post regarding a case reported on March 23, 2025. This is a fact-finding invitation, and your cooperation will be highly appreciated. Upon arrival, please report to the O/C SID at the SID Office, Ikeja, Lagos.
