President Tinubu had announced the removal of the petroleum subsidy regime during his inaugural speech on May 29, citing the absence of subsidy provisions in the 2023 budget as the reason for the decision.

Following this, the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited and other oil marketers raised the price of petrol from about N537/litre to between N617 and N630/litre, leading to widespread concerns across the country.

In response to the fuel hike, Sunday Attah, the convener of Stand Up Nigeria, voiced his support for the Tinubu-led administration’s decision, emphasizing the need to back the government in delivering the dividends of democracy.

He acknowledged that while the announcement had generated mixed feelings, it was necessary due to the country’s financial constraints and the corruption associated with subsidy claims.

Attah stated, “After observing the initial reaction to the measure and the attendant panic buying and other impacts on the socio-economic life of Nigerians, we wish to state that the President has done the right thing by removing the subsidy as the advantages of doing so outweigh the disadvantages.”

He further highlighted that the initial issues of long queues at fuel stations had disappeared, and access to petroleum products had become easier and more efficient, benefiting the citizens who could now refill their tanks without facing unnecessary delays.
