Youths in Kogi State have staged protests against the anticipated arrest of former Governor Yahaya Bello by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). According to reports by Naija News, the anti-graft agency is pursuing legal action against the former Kogi governor on charges of alleged involvement in an N80.2 billion fraud.
Members of the Coalition of Civil Society for Democracy and Africa Youths, Coalition for Justice, organized the demonstrations, gathering in significant numbers to block the Lokoja-Abuja highway. Holding aloft banners bearing messages such as “President Tinubu, call EFCC to order,” “EFCC stop witch hunting,” and “Yahaya Bello remains a responsible citizen,” the protesters made their grievances known.
Speaking to the press in Lokoja, Richard Otitoleke, the Convener of the coalition, underscored their commitment to upholding the principles of the rule of law and democratic governance. He urged caution and adherence to due process in Bello’s legal proceedings, accusing the EFCC of conducting a trial by media against the former governor.
Otitoleke emphasized the significance of the rule of law in a democratic society, highlighting that a court of competent jurisdiction had issued an interim restraining order prohibiting the invitation, arrest, or prosecution of the former governor pending the resolution of his human rights issue.
He called upon President Bola Tinubu to promptly review the EFCC’s operations to ensure their compliance with professional standards and the laws of Nigeria.
