AIG Okolo Sets Record Straight On IGP Egbetokun’s Alleged Comments On State Police In Nigeria....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Assistant Inspector General of Police, Ben Okolo, has clarified that his remarks made during the National Dialogue on State Police in Abuja were personal opinions. Contrary to earlier reports, Okolo stated that he was not representing the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun at the event. He expressed his belief that Nigeria is not yet mature enough for the establishment of state police, despite the nation facing numerous security challenges.

Okolo also proposed that the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) should operate as departments under the Police Force. However, his statements sparked criticism from many Nigerians, who argued that the country’s escalating insecurity necessitates immediate action.

Addressing the issue at a briefing held at the Force Headquarters, Okolo retracted his earlier comments and clarified his stance. He emphasized that his assertion regarding Nigeria’s readiness for a decentralized police force was solely his personal viewpoint and did not represent the official position of the police force or the IGP. Okolo assured that the stance of the Force on this matter would be formally communicated soon.

In contrast to Okolo’s stance, President Bola Tinubu, represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, reiterated his administration’s commitment to reforming the nation’s policing system to enhance security. Tinubu was supported by former President Goodluck Jonathan and former Head of State Abdulsalami Abubakar, who emphasized the non-negotiable importance of state police despite its associated challenges.

Furthermore, Minister of Police Affairs Ibrahim Gaidam diverged from the IGP’s perspective, advocating for a decentralized police system as a more effective measure to combat crime and improve security in the country.
