Tunji-Ojo made this statement during a media briefing in Abuja on Friday, emphasizing that the government is unable to subsidize passport fees for Nigerians. He noted that the price hike does not affect Nigerians living abroad.
“The increase in passport fees is based on a cost-benefit analysis, particularly in light of the exchange rate between the dollar and the naira. If the government were to subsidize any service, it shouldn’t be passports,” Tunji-Ojo stated.
He clarified that the fee for the 32-page passport booklet, which previously cost N35,000, has risen to N50,000, while the 64-page passport booklet, previously priced at N70,000, now costs N100,000.
This clarification follows the Nigerian Immigration Service’s announcement in August 2024 regarding the revised passport fees. According to the new fee structure, there has been no increase for Nigerians abroad.
