In an interview facilitated by Matthew Koffi Okono, founder of the Open Forum Care for Humanity Foundation, the victims—a woman and two men—described their ordeal, including torture, starvation, and being forced to drink floodwater.

The kidnapping occurred on August 17, 2023, when their vehicle was stopped along Gusau road by armed men disguised in civilian and military attire. The attackers removed their belongings and herded them into the bush, where some managed to escape.

Describing their living conditions, they explained that they were held in an open forest with no shelter, using rice sacks to sleep and seeking refuge under trees during rain. They endured a constant fear of wild animals and the threat of their captors.

One victim, Solomon, recounted being singled out for punishment after telling his captors that his family could not pay a ransom. He faced brutal treatment, including beatings and forced starvation, before being transported to Kaduna while chained.

Another survivor, a female corps member, described her two-month ordeal, emphasizing the lack of food and sanitation, as well as the difficulty of communicating with their captors.

Following their release, the corps members expressed gratitude to the government, the military, and the NYSC for their support. Upon their return, they were given the option to continue their service or restart their year, choosing to continue despite the trauma they faced. They have all received their discharge certificates.
