Rent Dispute Turns Violent As Tenant Attacks Landlord Over Massive Increase In Benin

Published

A tenant has allegedly attacked his landlord, smashing his head during a violent disagreement over an increase in annual house rent from ₦300,000 to ₦1 million in Benin City, Edo State.

The confrontation reportedly began after the landlord questioned renovation work carried out by the tenant, who claimed he had personally financed the improvements to make the apartment more suitable for his business.

According to the tenant, the disagreement started when the landlord confronted him over tiling work he had undertaken in the property. He explained that he had spent his own money on the renovation, believing the improvements would benefit his business and the apartment.

However, he alleged that the landlord demanded additional payment for the renovation and subsequently raised his annual rent from ₦300,000 to ₦1 million.

In a video shared online on Friday, October 30, the tenant recounted how the disagreement escalated into a physical confrontation.

He alleged that the landlord slapped him during the argument, prompting him to retaliate by striking and smashing the landlord’s head.

Explaining his actions, the tenant said: “He slapped me first and out of my defence, I smashed his head. It wasn’t intentional.”

The confrontation reportedly left the landlord with serious head injuries, although details surrounding his current condition and whether any arrests have been made were not immediately available.

The incident has sparked conversations about rising rental costs, disputes between landlords and tenants, and the dangers of allowing disagreements over property matters to escalate into violence.
