Emphasizing health as a fundamental human right, President Tinubu revealed plans for an extensive overhaul of physical infrastructure, equipment, and the retraining of frontline health workers, scheduled to commence in 2024. Tinubu expressed pride in Nigeria’s status as a hub for top-tier medical minds, leading his administration to allocate a significant budget for the health sector in the 2024 budget currently under consideration by the National Assembly. He appealed to Nigerian medical practitioners abroad to return home and serve their fellow citizens.
“We encourage Nigerian health professionals in the Diaspora, following the examples of Professor Ali Pate and Tunji Alausa, to dedicate their time to come back home and serve their people. Consider your contributions here at home, as we say, ‘Charity begins at home.’ For the developed countries that have benefited from the remarkable talents of Nigerian health workers, we strongly urge them to support the expansion of training facilities in Nigeria to replace those they have recruited from here. Explore the short and long-term opportunities that we offer.”
President Tinubu acknowledged Nigeria’s vibrant and well-educated society but stressed the need for collective efforts to address the challenges posed by climate change and the deterioration of the healthcare system. He expressed confidence in the country’s ability to rise above these challenges.
