Nollywood filmmaker, Obi Emelonye, has revealed that former Nigerian Head of State, Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (IBB), once admitted that the hardest decision he ever made as a soldier was ordering the execution of his childhood friend, Mamman Vatsa.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Speaking in a recent interview with media personality Chude Jideonwo, Emelonye shared insights from his biopic, Badamasi: Portrait of a General, which explores Babangida’s life and military career.

A Friendship Tested by Military Politics

Emelonye recounted that Babangida and Vatsa shared a deep bond, having been classmates at Bida Secondary School and coursemates at the Nigerian Military School. Their friendship continued as they advanced through the ranks.

According to Emelonye, Babangida recalled how Vatsa took over his command after he was wounded during the Nigerian Civil War and later appointed him as FCT Minister—a testament to their trust and loyalty.

The Coup That Sealed Vatsa’s Fate

Despite their close relationship, Vatsa was implicated in a coup plot against Babangida. Emelonye explained that in military politics, failing to report a coup was as serious as participating in one.

He narrated that the conspirators not only planned to assassinate Babangida at Dodan Barracks but also intended to burn down the barracks with his family inside. Vatsa, despite knowing about the plot, remained silent—a decision that proved fatal.

‘The Hardest Decision I Ever Made’

Emelonye revealed that Babangida agonized over the decision but ultimately saw Vatsa’s silence as a betrayal. In the end, military tradition prevailed over personal loyalty, making it the most painful choice of Babangida’s career.
