Revolt in Uniform: Policemen Set To Down Tools Over Starvation Wages – Sowore Sounds Alarm
Sowore made this known during an appearance on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief on Wednesday.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
He explained that the affected officers had earmarked July 21 for the protest, with another wave planned for August 1.
“Our proposal, which many officers are seriously considering, is to withdraw their services — especially from the so-called ‘big men’ responsible for the deplorable state of their welfare,” Sowore said.
He added:
“If the Inspector General of Police wakes up on July 21 and discovers there are no officers to drive him or guard him, perhaps then he’ll take the situation seriously.”
Sowore criticized police leadership for underestimating the grievances of active officers, wrongly assuming discontent is only among retirees.
“Contrary to what top brass believe, those most agitated and ready to act are the serving officers,” he said. “They’re prepared to down tools.”
According to him, many officers feel their current salaries are virtually worthless, considering the high risk of the job and the poor retirement benefits.
“How do you serve this country for 35 years and end up with a ₦35,000 pension? What can that even buy — maybe just a recharge card?” he asked.
Sowore called for a comprehensive overhaul of police welfare and urged Nigerians — especially celebrities and public figures who enjoy police protection — to back the protest.
“When you earn between ₦57,000 and ₦140,000 a month, depending on your rank, how do you survive in a country with 24% inflation, school fees to pay, and medical bills to cover?” he questioned.
