Families of abductees, speaking to The PUNCH, explained that they chose to ignore the government’s warning due to the fear that the lives of the victims might be at risk if the ransom was not paid. In a recent incident in Ekiti State, pupils and teachers from Apostolic Faith Group of Schools, Emure Ekiti, were released after a ransom of N15m and additional items, including food and drinks, were provided to the kidnappers.

While the school’s proprietor, Gabriel Adesanya, confirmed the payment of a ransom, he did not disclose the exact amount. The Minister of Defence, Abubakar Badaru, previously cautioned against crowd-funding for ransom, acknowledging the high incidence of kidnappings, especially in the Federal Capital Territory.

Law enforcement agencies, including the Nigeria Police Force, have also discouraged the practice, describing it as criminal and emphasizing its negative impact on security. The Force Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, stressed in an interview that ransom payment is considered a crime in Nigeria.

However, families of abductees justify their actions, asserting that they pay ransoms to ensure the safety of their loved ones. Kidnapped victims, such as Mohammed Shehu in Zamfara State, revealed how they resorted to crowd-funding to meet the ransom demands. Despite the legal implications, families, friends, colleagues, and even top government officials contribute to raising funds to secure the release of kidnapped individuals.

The debate surrounding the legality and morality of crowd-funding for ransoms persists, with victims and their families arguing that the urgent need to save lives often overrides concerns about the legal consequences. As the government urges against this practice, victims and their families emphasize the crucial role of ensuring citizens’ safety and security to discourage the necessity of resorting to crowd-funding for ransom payments.
