Okocha emphasized that as the opposition in Rivers, it is the APC’s duty to monitor the state government’s actions. He stated, “Our role as a vital opposition is to advocate for the voiceless through constructive criticism and highlight areas needing improvement for the state government.”
He added that their aim is to weaken Fubara and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to facilitate a smoother path for the APC in the 2027 elections. “We cannot afford to applaud the PDP in Rivers; that would hinder our chances in future elections,” he explained.
Reflecting on the party’s past, Okocha noted that the APC had previously functioned more like a social club under former leader Rotimi Amaechi. He stressed that the current goal is to diminish the strength of opposition parties to enhance their electoral prospects in 2027.
Okocha also commented on the Federal High Court’s dismissal of a suit seeking to replace pro-Wike lawmakers, asserting that there is no evidence they are registered APC members. “I have made efforts to recruit them, but they did not join us,” he stated.
He challenged anyone claiming these lawmakers defected to the APC to provide proof of their registration. The pro-Wike lawmakers were reported to have switched from the PDP to the APC on December 12, 2023. The court deemed the suit filed by the Action Peoples Party (APP) as statute-barred, as it was not filed within the required timeframe. The APP sought for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to declare the lawmakers’ seats vacant and conduct by-elections.
