Speaking at a sensitization campaign organized by the Zamfara State Substance Abuse Control and Prohibition of Human Trafficking Agency in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO) in Gusau, Governor Lawal, represented by Secretary to the State Government Malam Abubakar Mohammed Nakwada, emphasized that combating drug abuse is a top priority for his administration.
“The effects of drug abuse extend across generations, undermining human potential, fracturing families, and jeopardizing the future of our youth,” he stated. “This is a battle that requires immediate and sustained action, and I assure you that we are fully committed to this fight.”
Lawal noted that his administration has recognized the urgent need to address the illicit use of drugs, highlighting its connection to many serious crimes in society, including banditry. “This understanding has led us to establish a Substance Abuse Control and Prohibition of Human Trafficking Agency. Recently, I also inaugurated a comprehensive committee, chaired by the First Lady, to tackle drug abuse and related social issues directly.”
He expressed gratitude to the WHO, development partners, and law enforcement agencies for their ongoing support, reaffirming the state government’s commitment to utilizing their expertise for sustainable development.
During the event, Dr. Muktar Raji, the State Coordinator of the WHO, presented a merit award to Governor Lawal, commending him for prioritizing human capital development in Zamfara.
