Rivers Assembly Under Probe Over Alleged Govt Funding Of PUMS

The Rivers State House of Assembly has commenced an investigation into funds released by the state government to PAMO University of Medical Sciences (PUMS) since the institution was established in 2017.

According to Bush Radio Academy, the investigation followed the constitution of a seven-member Ad-Hoc Committee by the Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Martin Amaewhule, to examine the government’s financial support for the university and determine whether the funds were properly utilised.

The probe was announced in a statement signed by the Chairman of the House Committee on Information, Hon. Enemi Alabo George.

The committee, constituted in accordance with Section 128 of the 1999 Constitution, as amended, has been mandated to establish the total amount of money released to PUMS by the Rivers State Government since its establishment and investigate whether the funds were used for the purposes for which they were provided.

The lawmakers are also expected to examine the university’s scholarship programme, determine the number of beneficiaries and establish their identities.

The Ad-Hoc Committee is chaired by Rt. Hon. Dumle Maol, with Hon. Silvanus Nwankwo, Hon. Lemchi Nyeche, Hon. Henrietta Loolo, Hon. Peter Abbey, Hon. Napoleon Ukalikpe and Hon. Emilia Amadi serving as members.

Beyond the financial allocations and scholarship scheme, the committee is expected to examine other matters relating to the Rivers State Government’s funding of PUMS and present its findings and recommendations to the House.

The committee has been given until September 30, 2026, to submit its report to the Rivers State House of Assembly.
