The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has reported the successful dismantling of four illegal oil refining sites in Cawthome Channel One, located in the Degema Local Government Area of Rivers State. The spokesperson for the NSCDC in Rivers State, Olufemi Ayodele, released a statement on Monday night, January 22, detailing the intervention. The NSCDC’s marine unit, acting on gathered intelligence, moved swiftly to thwart the illegal activities and potentially apprehend the culprits involved.
The statement emphasized the NSCDC’s commitment to combating illegal oil bunkering, pipeline vandalism, and unlawful dealings in petroleum products. Driven by the zero-tolerance policy of the NSCDC Commandant-General, Dr. Ahmed Audu, the directive was issued to the Rivers State Commandant, Basil Igwebueze, to intensify intelligence efforts and safeguard critical national assets and infrastructure, both on land and in waterways.
The success of the NSCDC’s Marine Unit was attributed to credible intelligence indicating that suspects were engaging in illegal oil bunkering activities in the Damakiri Area of Cawthome Channel One. The criminals had vandalized Sahara Oil Well Heads and pipes, subsequently siphoning crude oil and establishing a local refining site in the region.
The statement highlighted the determination of the Marine Unit to combat illegal oil bunkering activities in waterways. Upon arrival, the suspects fled upon sighting the marine operatives. Following the order of the State Commandant, a thorough destruction operation targeted all materials used in the illegal oil bunkering activities, resulting in the obliteration of over four different refining stations.
