This increase surpasses the ₦70,000 minimum wage set by President Bola Tinubu in July to address economic pressures. Governor Fubara highlighted the significant growth in the state’s IGR during his tenure, noting that it had surged from ₦11 billion under the previous administration to ₦27 billion under his leadership.
In a statement to the press on Tuesday, Chukwuma Osunna, Chairman of the Nigeria Civil Service Union, Rivers State Chapter, confirmed that the new salary structure had been implemented. He said, “The governor has kept his promise. As of today, November 27, 2024, I can confirm that workers have received the ₦85,000 minimum wage, and they are very happy. We held a meeting with the Head of Service, reviewed the salary chart, and confirmed that the increase was accurately calculated and included in the November salary. Payments have started today, and other banks will begin disbursing the funds by tomorrow.
