Prior to the Supreme Court’s decision, the Appeal Court had already affirmed Sanwo-Olu’s victory, upholding the earlier validation by the Governorship Election Petition Tribunal.
Justice Garba Lawal, delivering the lead judgment, dismissed the appeal filed by Labour Party’s gubernatorial candidate, Mr. Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, stating that it lacked merit. The court also declared that the deputy governor, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, was qualified to contest the election.
This ruling effectively puts an end to the efforts of the Labour Party and Rhodes-Vivour to overturn Sanwo-Olu’s convincing victory along with his running mate, Dr. Kadiri Hamzat. Additionally, the Supreme Court rejected the appeal from Abdulazeez Adediran, also known as Jandor, the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), citing that Jandor’s argument was a pre-election issue and should not have been brought before the tribunal.
In response to the verdict, Sanwo-Olu expressed his gratitude in a personally signed statement, characterizing it as a “revalidation of residents’ position and a victory for democracy.” He emphasized that the victory belonged not only to him and his deputy but also to the rule of law, democracy, and the entire people of Lagos State.
Sanwo-Olu invited those who were still undecided to embrace progressive governance and highlighted the inclusive governance approach since May 29, 2019. He acknowledged the judiciary’s role, commending the Supreme Court judges, as well as those from the Lagos State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal and the Court of Appeal, for their commitment to fairness and justice.
The Governor extended his appreciation to the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the opportunity to represent the party in the election and lauded party leaders and members for their dedicated efforts. He also commended President Bola Tinubu for contributing to the deepening of Nigeria’s democracy.
Sanwo-Olu reassured Lagosians that the judicial victory would motivate his government to continue its progress, delivering on the promises made to the people. He pledged to accelerate interventions in line with the THEMES+ developmental agenda, emphasizing that the Supreme Court’s ruling marked the conclusion of the judicial process on the governorship election.
