Following a meeting with transport stakeholders on Monday, Abdulateef Bello, the Director of DRTS, had hinted at the need to reclaim taxi ranks across the territory to facilitate the establishment of a unified mass transportation system in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Consequently, the department commenced the demolition of illegal structures at the Area 3 and Banex Junction Taxi Ranks in Abuja on Friday.

At the Area 3 Taxi Rank, the DTRS team, supported by security agencies, demolished various establishments such as a car wash, mechanic workshops, a cinema house, and eateries operating within the ranks.

Simultaneously, at the Banex Junction Taxi Rank, where miscreants had taken over the ranks for illicit activities, including selling hard drugs and adulterated fuel, the authorities took action.

Mrs. Deborah Osho, Head of Operations at DRTS, leading the team, clarified that the goal was to create space for more taxis to operate within the ranks. This initiative aims to discourage the prevalence of illegal taxi parks across the city and address the menace of “one chance” operators who exploit illegal parks for their illicit activities.

Following a meeting with transportation stakeholders, a resolution was reached to clear taxi ranks, ensuring that taxis operate exclusively within the ranks. A temporary taxi rank around Eagle Square has been provided to curb the existence of illegal parks near the Federal Secretariat.

Mrs. Osho expressed the department’s commitment to cleaning all taxi ranks in 2024, with the intention of ensuring that commuters board taxis within designated ranks, thereby reducing the incidence of “one chance” crimes in the city.

Dr. Peter Olumuji, FCTA Secretary, Command and Control Centre in the Department of Security, emphasized that one-chance crimes occur due to the absence of secure taxi ranks. Clearing illegal structures will allow more vehicles into the ranks, providing commuters with safe and secure taxis.

Deputy Chairman of the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria, FCT Chapter, Mr. Richard Siso, welcomed the development, describing it as the best support the government has provided to transport operators. He expressed full support for the initiative.
