This resolution was reached amid increasing speculation about a potential coalition with other opposition parties to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). However, during a crucial meeting held from Wednesday night into Thursday morning in Abuja, PDP leaders dismissed any plans to abandon the party in favor of a coalition.
Present at the high-level meeting were notable figures, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, as well as former Senate Presidents David Mark and Bukola Saraki. Others in attendance included former governors Ahmed Makarfi (Kaduna), Sule Lamido (Jigawa), and Aminu Tambuwal (Sokoto), alongside ex-ministers Adamu Maina Waziri (Police Affairs) and Lawal Batagarawa (Defence).
Governors Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State and Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri of Adamawa State represented their colleagues at the meeting.
Sources familiar with the meeting revealed that discussions were candid and productive, with all present agreeing that the PDP should focus its efforts on internal reconciliation and capacity building.
A party insider told The Sun:
“They briefed the governors on a clear plan to rebuild the party and encouraged unified action toward this goal. The consensus was that resources should be directed towards strengthening the PDP rather than forming a new coalition. All parties, including the APC, face internal crises, so PDP must focus on resolving its issues and repositioning itself for the 2027 elections.”
The leaders emphasized that the party’s revival would require a united front, urging all members to commit to rebuilding from within rather than seeking external alliances.
