Tinubu’s Envoy List Triggers Backlash Over Marginalization OF Seasoned Diplomats

The administration of President Bola Tinubu has reportedly strayed from the long-established 70/30 formula for ambassadorial appointments, significantly reducing the proportion of career diplomats in favor of political nominees....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
According to a diplomatic source who spoke anonymously with The Sun, the development has sparked concern among foreign service professionals, who fear that sidelining experienced diplomats could undermine Nigeria’s global representation.
Traditionally, 70% of ambassadorial slots are reserved for career diplomats, while 30% are allocated to political appointees. However, the source revealed that this balance has been skewed further in favor of political interests.
“They’ve reduced the number—possibly even the percentage—of career diplomats, which is quite disheartening,” the source lamented. “What we’re hearing suggests that the 70% benchmark is being eroded, and that’s unfortunate.”
Asked about the implications, the source responded, “It means we may soon have more non-career ambassadors than professionals trained in diplomacy.”
While acknowledging that some political appointees may adapt well to diplomatic roles, the source criticized the move as largely driven by political patronage. “Yes, a few non-career individuals can rise to the challenge. But overall, this appears to be ‘jobs for the boys.’ The hopes and progression of seasoned diplomats are being sacrificed on the altar of politics.”
Reports suggest that several political heavyweights—including former governors Okezie Ikpeazu and Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, ex-senator Shehu Sani, former Aviation Minister Femi Fani-Kayode, and ex-presidential aide Reno Omokri—are currently undergoing security screening as potential nominees.
However, officials at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs could not independently verify the complete list or confirm the inclusion of these names. The Ministry acknowledged the growing speculation surrounding the mix of nominees but stated that the list is still under review.
Once finalized, the list will be submitted to President Tinubu for approval before being forwarded to the National Assembly for confirmation.
