The Nigerian Senate is set to commence a public hearing on a proposal aimed at increasing the salaries, allowances, and fringe benefits of judges and other judicial officers across the country. According to Naija News, this initiative is part of a larger effort to improve the welfare of the judiciary, which is seen as essential for maintaining the independence and efficiency of the judicial system.
A notice for the upcoming public hearing, scheduled for today at 12 pm, has been issued. The notice, marked NASS/S/CJHL/024 10th Sen/2024/01, was specifically addressed to the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi.
Lawmakers have invited the Attorney-General to provide his insights and recommendations on the proposed adjustments. The notice, dated May 14, 2024, was signed by Senator Mohammed Monguno, the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights, and Legal Matters. Senator Monguno explained, “The Senate, at its Plenary Sitting, considered the Judiciary Officers (Salaries and Allowances etc.) Bill 2024, and referred it to the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters for further legislative action.”
Senator Monguno further noted that the committee had held a series of meetings and decided to conduct a public hearing to gather comments and viewpoints on the bill from stakeholders and the general public.
This legislative move follows the passage of a similar bill by the House of Representatives, initially proposed by President Bola Tinubu. The bill aims to revise the compensation framework for judicial officers, aligning with ongoing discussions about enhancing judicial independence through adequate remuneration.
