Imaseun made this statement on Tuesday in response to allegations of bias raised by Akpoti-Uduaghan’s legal counsel, Abiola Akiode. He stressed that the case, which had garnered significant public attention, had been concluded at the Senate level, with no further action to be taken.
Earlier, Akiode had called for Imaseun’s resignation as chairman of the committee, arguing that his handling of the case lacked impartiality.
“Our intention is that if we are to proceed, we request the chair to step down to ensure fairness and justice in line with the constitution,” Akiode stated.
In response, Imaseun defended the committee’s decision, stating that the case was already before a court, and as per Senate rules, it would no longer be entertained.
He pointed out procedural flaws in the original petition, including Akpoti-Uduaghan’s direct involvement in signing it, which violated Senate regulations.
Imaseun further cited Order 40(7) of the Senate rule book, which prohibits deliberation on matters already in court. Given these circumstances, he affirmed that the committee would step back and allow the judiciary to handle the case, officially marking it as closed within the Senate.
