the Nigerian government ordered the closure of all borders with Niger Republic and interrupted power supply to the country following the overthrow of Niger’s civilian government in August.

During Tuesday’s plenary, Senator Suleiman Kawu Sumaila (NNPP, Kano) presented a motion, expressing concerns that the border closure had negatively impacted economic activities in several border towns, including Sokoto, Zamfara, Katsina, Kebbi, Jigawa, Borno, and Yobe states.

Sumaila called upon the Federal Government to consider reopening the borders, emphasizing that the closure contradicted the provisions of the Nigerian constitution, which ensure the security and welfare of citizens.

However, Senate President Godswill Akpabio indicated that the Senate had decided to align with the resolutions of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) regarding the political situation in Niger Republic. Consequently, he requested Senator Sumaila to withdraw the motion, citing security implications associated with reopening the borders.
