According to the Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, this innovative platform, known as Tertiary Education Research, Applications, and Services (TERAS), leverages information technology to revitalize and strengthen the country’s tertiary education system.

The unveiling of this initiative, facilitated by the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), took place in Abuja on Tuesday.

The minister emphasized the government’s commitment to providing unwavering support to both beneficiary institutions and TETFund to fully harness the potential of TERAS.

He stressed the importance of investing in education, especially in light of challenges such as disruptions caused by COVID-19 and ongoing funding issues in the education sector.

The Executive Secretary of TETFund, Sonny Echono, elaborated on the concept behind TERAS, describing it as a centralized hub for various tertiary education services.

TERAS was conceived during the challenging times of the COVID-19 pandemic when the education system faced significant disruptions.

TERAS is designed to seamlessly integrate several vital components, starting with identity management through the Beneficiary Identity Management System (BIMS).

It includes a federated academic repository to address challenges related to accessing educational resources and research materials for students, researchers, and institutions.

TERAS also offers services like sponsored Mobile Internet Access, EagleScan for plagiarism checks, aggregated Journal & Research Subscriptions (including EBSCO), Blackboard Learning Management System, Digital Literacy (ICDL and Communication Skills), and Intervention Funding, all accessible to institutions, staff, and students.

In his remarks, Prof. Yakubu Ochefu, the Secretary of the Committee of Vice-Chancellors of Nigerian Universities, likened TERAS to an educational technology mall.

He encouraged individuals with technology solutions that could enhance the education sector and contribute to Nigeria’s educational technology (edu-tech) to come forward. Additionally, he urged the minister to ensure that TERAS serves as a research platform accessible to all Nigerians, emphasizing its foundation on the public education platform.
