The Senate has temporarily suspended its ongoing session due to the contentious response that arose during the assessment of the ministerial nominee, Festus Keyamo, representing Delta State.

The crux of the issue lay in Keyamo’s history of declining numerous invitations from various committees in the 9th National Assembly, despite having previously served as the Minister of State for Labour and Employment in the government of Muhammadu Buhari.

Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe voiced his concern, urging Senate President Godswill Akpabio to suspend Keyamo’s screening until he acknowledges the Senate’s authority to summon and interrogate any Minister and their respective Ministry.

However, when a voice vote was conducted, a definitive course of action remained elusive, leading to a tumultuous session marked by disagreement.

Once order was restored, Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele proposed extending the session’s duration and convening a closed-door meeting within the upper legislative chamber.

Subsequent to the closed-door deliberations, the Senate reconvened and announced its decision to adjourn the session temporarily. They intend to resume later on the same day once a consensus is reached on the matter at hand.
