The Muslim Media Watch Group of Nigeria (MMWG) has expressed its appreciation to the Senate for its resolution advocating the imposition of the death penalty on individuals convicted of drug trafficking. In a statement released by its National Coordinator, Alhaji Abdullahi Ibrahim, the MMWG commended the Senate for its bold decision, considering it as one of the most significant bills passed since the inception of the 10th National Assembly.
Highlighting the nexus between Nigeria’s security challenges and issues such as drug addiction, Ibrahim urged the House of Representatives to concur with the Senate’s resolution. He emphasized the imperative role of addressing drug-related crimes in tackling the country’s security concerns.
While acknowledging the contributions of Senate Chief Whip, Senator Ali Ndume (APC Borno South), and his deputy, Senator Onyekachi Nwebonyi (APC Ebonyi South), in advancing the bill, Ibrahim countered criticisms against capital punishment for violent crimes in Nigeria. He pointed out that numerous countries, including Malaysia, China, and Iran, enforce the death penalty for drug trafficking.
Critiquing human rights organizations advocating for the abolition of capital punishment, Ibrahim underscored the necessity of implementing such penalties in restoring peace and tranquility in Nigeria, particularly amidst rising violent crimes.
Furthermore, Ibrahim urged President Bola Tinubu not to delay signing the bill into law, emphasizing its potential to curb criminal activities in the country.
Regarding the cybersecurity levy imposed on Nigerians, the MMWG criticized the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), labeling it as an insensitive government body. The group deemed the levy ill-timed and unwarranted, urging the apex bank to refrain from exacerbating the economic challenges faced by Nigerians. Ibrahim called on President Tinubu to intervene and compel the CBN to halt the implementation of the levy without further delay.
