The Chairman of the Senate Committee on Interior, Adams Oshiomhole, has brought attention to a concerning development: prisoners from foreign countries are reportedly being brought into Nigeria to work on construction sites. This revelation surfaced during a budget defense session with the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on December 6.

Expressing his dismay, Oshiomhole urged the Ministry of Interior to enhance its regulation of expatriate quotas, asserting that the current system not only allows the employment of foreign prisoners but also facilitates the displacement of Nigerian workers by expatriates. He emphasized that the situation is detrimental to the job market in Nigeria.

During the session, Oshiomhole revealed, “Many non-Nigerians are in the country, some of them live inside containers. They were being paid according to their country’s minimum wage by the construction industry that brought them. I don’t want to mention the companies’ names, but if I’m provoked, I’ll mention them.”

Responding to the concerns raised by the committee, Tunji-Ojo acknowledged the issue and outlined measures taken by the ministry to address the challenges. He mentioned the implementation of the Expatriate Employee Network, which aims to safeguard jobs intended for Nigerians and prevent exploitation by foreign workers.

This revelation has sparked discussions on the need for stricter regulations and oversight to protect the Nigerian job market from unfair practices and ensure that employment opportunities prioritize the nation’s citizens.
