In an interview with TVC, Ms. Ogbanje expressed frustration over her family’s continued struggle to secure justice for Ochanya, stating that their efforts have been met with constant setbacks.
She revealed that her aunt, Mrs. Felicia Ochiga-Ogbuja, with whom Ochanya lived, is still residing with her husband, Mr. Andrew Ogbuja, who was accused of repeatedly assaulting Ochanya alongside his son, Victor Ogbuja. Ms. Ogbanje also noted that Mr. Ogbuja continues to work as a lecturer at Benue State Polytechnic.
While acknowledging that she cannot comment extensively on Mr. Andrew’s case since he was acquitted by the court, she expressed disbelief that Victor remains free despite his whereabouts being known.
Speaking about Victor, she said:
“He was never arrested, never questioned. I was shocked when I began seeing his pictures everywhere — in Lagos — yet the Nigerian police claim they don’t know where he is. My brother has written several petitions demanding his arrest and prosecution, but nothing has been done.”
It will be recalled that 13-year-old Ochanya Ogbanje died in 2018 from complications resulting from prolonged sexual abuse.
Ochanya was only five years old when her family sent her to live with her aunt, Mrs. Felicia Ogbuja, whose husband lectures at Benue State Polytechnic, Ugbokolo. Tragically, from the age of eight until her death at thirteen, she was allegedly abused by both Andrew and Victor Ogbuja.
Before her death, Ochanya reportedly named her abusers while receiving treatment in the hospital for Vesicovaginal Fistula (VVF), a condition caused by the repeated assaults.
Following a court trial, Mr. Andrew Ogbuja was discharged and acquitted due to what was described as “prosecutorial failure.” His wife, Felicia Ochiga-Ogbuja, was sentenced to five months in prison for negligence, having failed to protect Ochanya from the abuse.
However, Victor Ogbuja has never been tried, as he has remained at large since 2018 when the case came to light.
The issue resurfaced recently after photos and videos of Victor surfaced online, showing him dancing and promoting a song in Lagos. The revelation sparked outrage among Nigerians, who questioned how authorities could claim ignorance of his whereabouts when he appears to be living freely.
