Sh*ck In Benue: Governor Alia Finally Yields, Suspends 3 Top Officials After Assembly Showdown

The decision was announced in a statement by the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Tersoo Kula, following the Assembly’s resolutions, which were formally communicated to the Governor.

According to the statement, Governor Alia endorsed the one-month suspension of the Executive Chairman of Otukpo Local Government Area, Maxwell Ogiri, as well as the Chairperson of the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Mrs. Grace Adagba. The Governor also approved the immediate one-month suspension of the Executive Secretary of the Benue State Lottery Commission, Michael Uper.

Governor Alia, while affirming his decision, emphasized his administration’s commitment to the rule of law, due process, and the principle of separation of powers. He praised the Assembly for fulfilling its constitutional duties and reassured Benue citizens that transparency, accountability, and good governance remain at the heart of his leadership.

He further directed all affected agencies to ensure uninterrupted service delivery during the suspension period and appealed to residents of the state to continue supporting his administration’s vision of building a functional and inclusive Benue.

Meanwhile, tension between the executive and legislative arms of government continues. Lawmakers had earlier accused the Governor of ignoring several critical issues raised by the Assembly.

In response, during a plenary presided over by Speaker Hyacinth Dajoh, the House resolved to suspend cooperation with the Governor, vowing not to honor any of his requests until their concerns are addressed. The lawmakers also rejected Alia’s recent request to screen and confirm new commissioner nominees, maintaining their stance until their grievances are resolved.
