The Muna camp, once one of the largest IDP facilities in the state, played a central role during the peak of the humanitarian crisis caused by the Boko Haram insurgency.

Announcing the closure, Governor Zulum cited the alarming rise in illicit activities within the camp as the main reason for his decision.

“We have observed an increase in prostitution, gangsterism, child abuse, and various forms of criminality within the camp,” he stated.

Zulum emphasized that the permanent defeat of Boko Haram hinges on the resettlement of displaced persons, underscoring the need for citizens to return to their ancestral homes and rebuild their livelihoods.

He also recalled his 2019 pledge to close all 12 official IDP camps in Maiduguri. With the exception of two informal camps, that promise has now been fulfilled.

According to the governor, approximately 75% of Muna’s IDPs were resettled in 2024. The remaining 25% are expected to return to their communities in the coming days.

As part of the resettlement efforts, the government will support all 6,000 households from the camp with food, shelter materials, and access to healthcare. Additionally, each household head—regardless of gender—will receive a cash grant of ₦100,000, while every housewife will be given an extra ₦50,000.
