Afe, who represents Akoko North-West II, and Agbulu, representing Akoko South-West II, made their decisions known in separate resignation letters read by the Clerk of the House, Benjamin Jayeola, during plenary.
The lawmakers attributed their exit to what they described as irreconcilable differences within the PDP.
Explaining his move, Afe said his decision came after “wide consultations with constituents and stakeholders,” stressing that the APC offered a more reliable platform to deliver the dividends of democracy to his people.
Agbulu, on his part, noted that the APC remained the “most credible political platform” to serve his constituency effectively. He, however, expressed appreciation to the PDP for the support he enjoyed while in the party.
With this defection, the APC now controls 24 of the 26 Assembly seats, leaving the PDP with just two.
Meanwhile, the Assembly also waded into the demands of the Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria (PASAN), Ondo chapter, which had recently issued a 21-day ultimatum to the state government over the non-implementation of the Consolidated Legislative Salary Structure (CONLESS).
Raising the matter, the Majority Leader, Olatunji Oshati (Ose/APC), described it as an issue of public importance and urged Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa to address the workers’ concerns. He pointed out that other South-West states had already implemented CONLESS, appealing to staff to remain patient while discussions with the governor continued.
Speaker of the House, Olamide Oladiji, also called for calm, commending staff for their patience and assuring them of the Assembly’s commitment to defend their interests.
“Implementing the salary structure will enhance capacity and efficiency. The leadership of the Assembly will continue to protect and advocate for our staff,” Oladiji pledged.
