Sh*ck Move: INEC Set To Release Fresh Guidelines Amid Election Result Disputes

INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, made the disclosure on Tuesday, July 1, during the Commission’s second quarterly consultative meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs), held at its headquarters in Abuja.
Yakubu emphasized that the Commission is preparing for five major elections over the next 13 months and that refining the rules for reviewing election declarations is critical.
“In response to growing concerns and debates around the interpretation of Section 65, the Commission is finalizing a supplement to the 2022 election guidelines, which will offer clearer direction on the review and reversal of election results,” he stated.
He added that once approved—possibly within the week—the supplementary document will be made available on INEC’s website and other platforms for public access.
Upcoming Elections Announced by INEC:
-
By-elections in 12 states – August 16, 2025
-
Anambra Governorship Election – November 8, 2025
-
FCT Area Council Elections – February 21, 2026
-
Ekiti Governorship Election – June 20, 2026
-
Osun Governorship Election – August 8, 2026
Yakubu also reminded Resident Electoral Commissioners that their responsibilities are not seasonal. “Your duties are full-time and go beyond general elections,” he said, urging them to intensify efforts and maintain consistent performance.
He encouraged RECs to provide regular staff training on new policies and innovations, without waiting for directives from the INEC headquarters.
Additionally, he announced that Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) will resume nationwide on August 18 for online registration, and August 25 for in-person registration. However, in Anambra State, where a governorship election is approaching, CVR will begin next week across all 326 wards.
The meeting also marked the first participation of four newly sworn-in RECs, as well as the formal introduction of two new National Commissioners—Professors Sunday Aja and Abdulrazak Yusuf.
Yakubu concluded by emphasizing the shared responsibility of electoral stakeholders: “This is a collective duty. We must all deliver on our roles with full commitment and understanding.”
