Obi, alongside several political leaders from the South-East geopolitical zone, officially declared for the ADC on Wednesday in Enugu State.
Explaining their decision, the leaders said the move was aimed at rescuing Nigeria from what they described as poor governance under the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Speaking at the event, Obi said the time had come for opposition forces to unite and work collectively to reclaim the country in the 2027 general elections. He urged opposition members to rally under the ADC, led by former Senate President David Mark, to “rescue Nigeria.”
“We are ending this year with hope, believing that 2026 will mark the beginning of a rescue mission,” Obi said.
He also vowed that the opposition would resist any attempt at election rigging in 2027 using all lawful means.
Obi described Nigeria as a nation in distress that urgently needs purposeful leadership, insisting that citizens who genuinely care about the country can no longer remain passive while conditions worsen.
“We cannot have a country where people who cannot even state the schools they attended are allowed to rule us, and the courts dismiss it as a pre-election matter,” he stated.
He stressed that leadership must be driven by example, criticising a system where government officials live extravagantly while urging citizens to endure hardship.
“A leader must lead by example. If you ask the people to fast, you must not feast,” Obi declared.
Obi further argued that Nigeria is not inherently poor but has been impoverished by corruption and looting, adding that the country has lost its standing in the global community.
“We have become a crime scene. Nigeria is now referred to as a disgraced nation,” he said.
The event was attended by several prominent figures, including ADC National Chairman David Mark; former Imo State governor Achike Udenwa; former Enugu State governor Okwesilieze Nwodo; Chief Onyema Ugochukwu; Senators Ben Obi, Enyinnaya Abaribe, Tony Nwoye and Victor Umeh, as well as other South-East leaders.
