Sh*ck Waves In Opposition: Atiku, Peter Obi Clash As Amaechi Emerges Top Choice For 2027 Presidency

As discussions intensify around forming a broad opposition coalition ahead of the 2027 general elections, former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Chibuike Amaechi, is emerging as a strong contender for a consensus presidential candidacy, according to insiders close to the alliance.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

While former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Labour Party’s Peter Obi were initially seen as central figures in the coalition, both leaders have remained adamant about their individual ambitions—especially Obi, who is reportedly insisting on running again with his 2023 running mate, Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed.

A member of the coalition’s steering committee disclosed to The Guardian that Amaechi is being positioned as a strategic backup option in light of the deadlock.

“Given the rigidity of both Atiku and Obi, some of us have agreed to keep Amaechi on standby,” the source stated. “Let’s not forget, he placed second in the APC presidential primaries.”

The former Rivers State governor, who turned 60 on May 27, is said to have used his birthday lecture—titled “Weaponising Hunger”—to subtly signal his readiness for a 2027 run.

During the event, Amaechi revealed that he had previously told President Bola Tinubu he would not support his presidential bid following the APC primaries.
“I told him directly I wouldn’t be part of his campaign. Two years later, I feel vindicated,” Amaechi said.

Buhari Loyalists Lean Toward Amaechi

Support for Amaechi is reportedly growing beyond opposition circles. Some loyalists of former President Muhammadu Buhari are also backing Amaechi as a preferable alternative to both Atiku and Obi, citing his governance record and internal party alignment.

Sources also noted that both Atiku and Obi have informally agreed to serve only one term if elected—an arrangement that may also apply to Amaechi due to zoning considerations.

All Democratic Alliance (ADA) in the Works?

There’s also talk of a new political party being formed to anchor the coalition. Dr. Umar Ardo, convener of the League of Northern Democrats (LND), confirmed discussions are ongoing about launching the All Democratic Alliance (ADA) instead of merging into established parties like the SDP or ADC.

According to Ardo, relying on existing political platforms carries legal and strategic risks:
“Existing party structures can be manipulated by the ruling party. If we collapse into them, we risk losing momentum,” he warned.

He also denied claims that the ADA is being created to advance Atiku’s political ambition:
“Atiku is in favour of a merger into an existing party. I oppose that. Does that mean I support him? That’s illogical.”

Obi’s Candidacy “Non-Negotiable”

Katch Ononuju, a prominent figure within the coalition, insisted that Peter Obi’s candidacy is “non-negotiable” if the alliance is to succeed. He confirmed that Obi intends to run again in 2027 with Datti Baba-Ahmed.

If the ADA gets registered, political watchers believe Amaechi could fly its presidential flag, while Atiku and Obi may compete for tickets from the SDP and ADC, respectively.

Dickson Warns Against 2015-Style Conspiracies

Former Bayelsa State Governor Seriake Dickson used Amaechi’s birthday platform to caution coalition leaders against repeating the political scheming that led to the fall of the PDP in 2015.

“Some of you here are masters at building coalitions to take down governments—just like you did to my party in 2015,” Dickson said.

“Now, over a decade later, hunger has been weaponized, and the people are still suffering. My advice: shine your eyes.”
