President Bola Tinubu’s Senior Special Assistant on Protocol, Demola Oshodi, has explained why figures like former presidential aide Reno Omokri, ex-INEC Chairman Mahmood Yakubu, and former Aviation Minister Femi Fani-Kayode appeared on the newly released ambassadorial list.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The inclusion of these individuals—whose names were forwarded to the National Assembly for screening—has sparked widespread reactions across the country.

Speaking on Arise News’ The Morning Show, Oshodi noted that every major appointment attracts both critics and supporters. He stressed that what truly matters is maintaining balance and understanding the President’s choice of individuals who can contribute to the administration’s success.

Responding to questions about the controversies surrounding the nominations of Yakubu, Omokri, and Fani-Kayode—and how they align with Nigeria’s foreign policy goals up to 2027—Oshodi said:
“We can consider the professor’s long years of service. He led Nigeria’s electoral body for several years and oversaw the 2019 and 2023 elections, which many believe were handled well. Non-career diplomats, such as these nominees, are political appointments. Their primary requirement is loyalty, and they have demonstrated loyalty and an understanding of the administration’s vision.”

When asked specifically how Yakubu had shown loyalty, Oshodi clarified that the criteria go beyond politics.
“It’s about national service. I provided multiple reasons for the President’s decision—ethnic and state balance, federal character considerations, and commendable service to the nation. We cannot simply narrow it down to loyalty.”

He added that Yakubu’s long-standing service to Nigeria could be a key factor, emphasizing that the President’s decision was likely based on a combination of competence, national service, and balance.

On Fani-Kayode, Oshodi explained that diplomatic appointments are guided by the President’s assessment of competence and capacity.
“Different countries require different skill sets. The President understands where each nominee fits. Fani-Kayode has served the nation in multiple roles. Being a polarizing figure does not disqualify him from further service. Personal issues remain personal. What matters here is national service and competence.”
