The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has suffered another major blow following the defection of Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah, and his Bayelsa counterpart, Douye Diri, to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The latest departures reduce the PDP’s control to eight governors, down from 11 after the 2023 general elections.

With this development, the APC now governs 26 states, while the PDP holds eight. The Labour Party (LP), All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), and New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) each control one state.

Governor Mbah formally announced his defection in Enugu on Tuesday, a move immediately welcomed by APC leaders. Barely 24 hours later, Diri confirmed his exit from the PDP in Yenagoa, citing “obvious reasons” for joining the ruling party.

As of Wednesday, the PDP governors still in office are:

  • Ahmadu Fintiri – Adamawa (North-East)

  • Bala Mohammed – Bauchi (North-East)

  • Caleb Mutfwang – Plateau (North-Central)

  • Agbu Kefas – Taraba (North-Central)

  • Dauda Lawal – Zamfara (North-West)

  • Seyi Makinde – Oyo (South-West)

  • Siminalayi Fubara – Rivers (South-South)

  • Ademola Adeleke – Osun (South-West)

Although some of the remaining governors, such as Taraba’s Agbu Kefas, have faced defection rumours, none have been confirmed so far.

The latest defections come just days after the Chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum and Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, admitted that the exodus had deeply shaken the party.

Speaking in Abuja on Saturday after inaugurating the party’s convention communication sub-committee, Mohammed described the situation as “worrying” but assured members that efforts were ongoing to stabilize the PDP ahead of its November 15–16 national convention in Ibadan.

He said, “If you ask me whether I am concerned about our governors leaving for APC, I am more than concerned. But leadership is a burden. As a leader among equals, I cannot dictate the choices or inactions of my colleagues. However, a lot of work is being done behind the scenes.”
