Among those present at the coalition’s launch were notable PDP leaders including former Senate President David Mark, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, and former Sokoto Governor Aminu Tambuwal. They criticized the PDP as having become “a shadow of itself” and urged Nigerians to embrace the ADC-led coalition as the only credible alternative heading into the 2027 elections.

Also in attendance were ex-governors Liyel Imoke (Cross River), Babangida Aliyu (Niger), Gabriel Suswam (Benue), and Sam Egwu (Ebonyi), along with former Jigawa governor Sule Lamido, ex-Minister of Police Affairs Waziri Maina, Senators Abdul Ningi and Tunde Ogbeha, and former Minister of External Affairs, Chief Tom Ikimi.

Just hours after the Abuja meeting, a resignation letter dated June 27 from David Mark to the PDP Chairman of Otukpo Ward in Benue State surfaced online. In it, Mark wrote:

“I write to formally inform you of my decision to resign my membership of the party with immediate effect.
You may recall that over the years, I have remained firm and deeply committed to the ideals of the PDP. However, recent events marked by deepening divisions, persistent leadership crises, and irreconcilable differences have reduced the party to a shadow of its former self.”

Mark revealed that his resignation followed extensive consultations with family and political allies, adding that he would now be joining the National Coalition of Political Opposition Movements to “rescue our nation and preserve our hard-earned democracy.”

Party sources told Daily Sun that Mark’s departure could be the first of many, as more PDP members involved in the coalition are expected to follow suit. Others may remain in the PDP nominally but work discreetly in support of the ADC during the 2027 elections.

Chinda Warns: ‘More Defections Inevitable’

House of Representatives Minority Leader, Kingsley Chinda, admitted that the coalition could indeed cause further defections—not just from the PDP, but also from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). However, he downplayed the coalition’s potential, describing it as a loose alliance of disgruntled politicians rather than a cohesive political force.

“The coalition is not a political party,” Chinda said. “It’s a gathering of politicians unhappy with their current positions, trying to form a new front.
I won’t say I wish them well. You don’t abandon a house you’re building midway to start another. I suspect many of them will eventually return.”

While acknowledging that such movements are part of democratic freedom, Chinda maintained that the PDP remains a strong platform with the capacity to bounce back.

PDP BoT Member Olafeso: ‘We Must Fix, Not Flee’

Similarly, PDP Board of Trustees (BoT) member, Eddy Olafeso, said while more defections are expected, new members will also be joining the party. He urged stakeholders to learn from history, emphasizing that stability, not division, is what the PDP needs.

“The party has blessed many of those now leaving,” Olafeso said. “Yes, mistakes were made, but the solution is not to run away. You fix your family; you don’t abandon it.
We appeal to them—think twice. Many have left in the past and later returned. We welcome them still.”

He concluded by calling for reconciliation and collective effort to reposition the PDP as a viable force ahead of 2027.
