President Bola Tinubu has approved the renaming of the Federal University of Education, Kano, to Yusuf Maitama Sule Federal University of Education.

The announcement was made on Monday, March 10, 2025, by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.

According to Tinubu, this decision honors the remarkable contributions of Yusuf Maitama Sule to Nigeria’s socio-political development and serves to inspire future generations with his legacy of integrity, patriotism, and leadership.

The statement reads:
“President Bola Tinubu has officially renamed the Federal University of Education in Kano as the Yusuf Maitama Sule Federal University of Education, in recognition of his immense contributions to Nigeria’s progress.

“Sule, who lived from 1929 to 2017, played a pivotal role in the country’s political and diplomatic landscape. He served as Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, where he chaired the UN Special Committee Against Apartheid.

“He also held key positions, including Chief Whip of the Federal House of Representatives (1954–1959), Leader of Nigeria’s Delegation to the Conference of Independent States (1960), First Federal Commissioner of Public Complaints (1976), and Minister of Mines and Power.”

President Tinubu emphasized that honoring Ambassador Sule’s legacy will encourage young Nigerians to embrace values of national service and excellence.

The Federal University of Education, Kano, originally established by the Kano State Government, is now one of seven specialized federal universities of education dedicated to training teachers and enhancing the country’s education system.
