Former Sokoto State Governor, Alhaji Attahiru Dalhatu Bafarawa, has officially resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Bafarawa announced his departure to focus on the Northern Star Youth Empowerment Initiative (NSYEI), a youth-focused platform he co-founded in late 2024. The initiative, aimed at fostering entrepreneurship and self-reliance among young people, was recently inaugurated at Arewa House in Kaduna.
In a resignation letter dated January 8, 2025, addressed to PDP National Chairman Umar Damagun, and acknowledged by the party on January 13, 2025, Bafarawa explained his decision. He stated that stepping away from partisan politics would allow him to avoid any conflict of interest as he takes on a leadership role in the NSYEI.
“I will now focus my efforts on raising awareness for youth entrepreneurship and empowerment programs to promote self-productivity, reduce redundancy, and encourage self-reliance,” Bafarawa said.
Expressing goodwill towards his former party, he added, “I wish the Peoples Democratic Party and its leadership the very best in all their future endeavours.” He also reflected on his time with the PDP, saying, “I am grateful for the opportunity to contribute to the party’s development as a committed member.”
Bafarawa, who served two terms as Sokoto State Governor, was a prominent figure in the PDP and played a pivotal role in Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal’s successful re-election in 2019 after severing political ties with Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wammako.
