Former presidential candidates Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi, along with former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai, have maintained silence amid growing public outrage following U.S. President Donald Trump’s threat of military intervention in Nigeria.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Trump, on Friday, reclassified Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern (CPC)”, alleging that Christians in the country face an existential threat. He also urged U.S. lawmakers to investigate what he described as mass killings of Christians and warned that the United States might deploy troops to intervene in the alleged crisis.

While Trump’s remarks have sparked anxiety among many Nigerians, some others have welcomed the U.S. leader’s statement.

However, President Bola Tinubu’s administration has strongly rejected the genocide claims, maintaining that Nigeria’s security challenges are not rooted in religion but in widespread criminality.

As of press time, key opposition figures such as Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi, who have been vocal critics of Tinubu’s economic policies, have yet to comment on the issue. Similarly, El-Rufai and former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi, both previously outspoken on national matters, have also remained silent.

Speaking to Daily Post, public affairs analyst Moses Jibila suggested that the silence of these political figures may be linked to their 2027 presidential ambitions.

He said, “They are being careful because this is a very sensitive matter. They know the truth, but because of their selfish interests, they won’t say anything.

“Someone like Atiku would prefer not to talk because he would get into trouble if he takes a position. If he denies the existence of Christian killings, Christians will turn against him at the polls. But if he supports Trump’s claim, his Muslim brothers will come for him.

“The same goes for Obi and the others. It’s all about political self-preservation,” he added.
