Florence Okpe, the spokesperson for the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Ogun Sector Command, confirmed the details of the accident to reporters in Abeokuta. According to Okpe, the primary cause of the accident was attributed to the Mazda bus driver losing control of the vehicle while asleep at the wheel.

The tragic incident involved a total of 18 individuals, comprising 10 male adults and eight female adults. Out of these, 12 people sustained injuries, while unfortunately, five individuals lost their lives in the collision.

Okpe provided insights into the factors contributing to the fatal crash, stating, “The suspected causes of the fatal crash were tyre burst, speed, and fatigue, which led to the loss of control because the driver slept off on the wheels and rammed into a moving truck.”

In the aftermath of the accident, the injured victims were promptly transported to Victory Hospital, Ogere, for medical attention, while the deceased were taken to FOS Morgue Ipara for the necessary procedures.

This tragic incident serves as a reminder of the importance of road safety measures and the need for drivers to remain vigilant, especially in situations where fatigue may pose a significant risk. Authorities continue to stress the significance of adherence to speed limits and regular vehicle maintenance to prevent such unfortunate occurrences on the nation’s roadways.
