Ohanaeze expressed dismay over the continued silence and inaction of Southeast political leaders, particularly the Governors, amid relentless killings and chaos in the region. The group revealed that over 300 people have been gruesomely murdered in the Southeast within just the first quarter of 2025, a tragedy worsened by what it described as the dangerous silence from the region’s leaders.

The organization accused Fulani herdsmen of being behind the attacks and said the Governors’ failure to act reflects a disturbing level of passivity and signals a collapse in governance.

In a statement signed by its Deputy President General, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, Ohanaeze demanded immediate, decisive action from Southeast Governors. It warned that if action is not taken, they would be forced to petition President Tinubu to invoke Section 305 of the Nigerian Constitution to impose a state of emergency in affected states.

Ohanaeze cited recent violent attacks in communities such as Ahuamufu and Okigwe in Enugu and Imo, Nkalaaha in Ebonyi, Uturu in Abia, and Umunze in Anambra, saying these must be met with fierce resistance.

The group lamented that farmers are being denied access to their lands, which threatens the region with a food crisis in 2025. It also noted that fear has gripped the region, discouraging families from returning home for the Easter celebrations, and warned that investor confidence is collapsing, jeopardizing the Southeast’s economy.

They issued a 30-day ultimatum to the Governors to expel the so-called killer herdsmen from the region, warning that failure to do so would force them to call for a state of emergency in any state where a Governor is seen as incapable of protecting citizens.

“Our position is clear,” the statement said. “The time for cowardice, hesitation, and weak leadership is over. The Governors must rise to the occasion and confront the escalating violence with the bravery and urgency the moment demands. This is a final call to action—our people demand peace, security, and leadership that does not shy away in the face of adversity.”
