Sowore Vs DSS: Secret Police Demand Deletion Of Viral Tweet

The Department of State Services (DSS) has written to X (formerly Twitter), demanding the removal of a tweet posted by human rights activist Omoyele Sowore within 24 hours.

The secret police warned that legal action would follow if the platform fails to comply.

The letter, signed by B. Bamigboye on behalf of the Director-General of State Services and addressed to X Corp.’s Chairman and CEO, Elon Musk, specifically called for the deletion of Sowore’s August 25, 2025, tweet.

According to the DSS, Sowore’s post—which accused President Bola Tinubu of lying about the absence of corruption during a visit to Brazil—amounts to misinformation, hate speech, incitement to violence, and a threat to national security. The agency further argued that the tweet violates provisions of the Criminal Code Act and the Cybercrimes Act 2025.

The DSS alleged that Sowore deliberately sought to tarnish the President’s image and damage Nigeria’s reputation, warning that his comments could incite unrest among Tinubu’s supporters.

“…We detected and monitored with dismay a trending post by Omoyele Sowore on his verified X handle @YeleSowore, on August 25, 2025, at about 11:38 PM WAT. The tweet ridiculed the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, describing him as a criminal and accusing him of shamelessly lying about corruption in Nigeria. Such publication poses a grave threat to national security.”
