The Project Manager, Mr. Tajudeen Olanipekun, dismissed funding issues as the cause of the delay, stating that the contract is well-funded.
The renovation, initiated in April 2022, has surpassed a year with no clear indication of completion. Despite the Speaker’s insistence on the December 31, 2023, deadline, Olanipekun, who views lawmakers as end users, asserts the deadline’s lack of absolute significance.
The Federal Capital Territory Administration, not the National Assembly management, is handling the project. Olanipekun emphasized reporting to the client, not the end users.
The Speaker’s unscheduled inspection aimed to enforce the December 31 deadline, ensuring legislative activities in the refurbished chamber for the 2024 session.
Pre-renovation, the National Assembly complex faced flooding issues, and the initial renovation budget of over N30 billion in 2019 drew criticism, leading to a reduction to N9 billion.
Rep. Amos Daniel, Chairman of the House Services Committee, pledged vigilant supervision to ensure the project’s timely and specified completion.
