State OF Emergency? Armed Security Forces Descend ON Lagos Assembly, Tension Escalates!
Tension gripped Lagos on Monday morning as armed security forces reportedly stormed the Lagos State House of Assembly complex in Alausa, Ikeja, ahead of an emergency plenary session.
Since 7 am, the security presence around the Assembly buildings and nearby areas, which had been in place for nearly two weeks, was heightened in anticipation of a possible leadership shift within the Lagos House.
Sources reveal that the newly elected Speaker, Mojisola Meranda, is expected to submit her resignation to allow for the appointment of a new speaker in line with the zoning agreement for candidates from the western region.
Meanwhile, officers from the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) and armed police personnel were stationed strategically around the complex. All visitors and staff were subjected to intense security checks before being granted access to the premises.
A staff member, speaking anonymously, told Vanguard, “The atmosphere in the Assembly is very tense this morning, with heavy security around the building. It took me more than an hour to get inside.”
After weeks of political maneuvering and discussions, President Bola Tinubu and senior figures from the All Progressives Congress (APC) reached a resolution over the crisis plaguing the Lagos State House of Assembly. This agreement, which followed several high-level talks, led to the confirmation of Mudashiru Obasa’s removal as Speaker. However, the resolution allows Obasa a smooth exit by officially framing his removal as a resignation.
