Steps Toward Real Democracy In Nigeria: Challenges And Progress

Despite its facade, Nigeria’s democracy consistently fails to adhere to true democratic principles. Reflecting on the past year in our complex political landscape compels a reassessment of our understanding of democracy. If democracy means a government of the people, by the people, and for the people, then Nigeria’s implementation starkly contradicts this definition.

Since shedding military rule 25 years ago, Nigeria’s democracy has increasingly marginalized its citizens. The focus has shifted to a political class obsessed with power struggles and holding onto office. These politicians, once in power, entrench themselves, prioritizing personal interests over the urgent needs of Nigerians. Democracy’s essence—active participation, representation, and responsiveness to public needs—has been compromised. Instead, we see democracy reduced to sustaining power rather than serving the public.

The consequences are profound. A growing disconnect between rulers and the ruled fuels disillusionment and apathy among citizens alienated from the political process. Lack of accountability and transparency has allowed corruption to flourish, eroding trust and hindering progress.

Today is a reminder to critically reassess our democracy, emphasizing genuine leadership and responsible governance in the public interest. Our democracy shouldn’t be a battleground for political maneuvers but a platform for servant leadership and public service. We must establish an inviolable electoral process, prohibiting the forceful imposition of candidates and condemning corruption.

Hijacking elections through violence or manipulation undermines representative government, silencing people’s voices. Embezzling public funds meant for schools and hospitals betrays public trust and steals from our nation’s future. We cannot continue like this and claim to uphold democracy.

Democracy demands leadership that prioritizes people’s needs, not political maneuvering. Nigeria excels at democratic politics but falls short of transformative leadership. It’s time to move beyond empty promises and partisan squabbles to address pressing issues sincerely and accountably. True leadership builds nations by putting people’s interests before personal gain.
