Students Protest Alleged Extortion By Setting Fire To Provost’s Residence In KebbiStudents at the College of Health Sciences and Technology in Jega, Kebbi State, protested violently, setting fire to the residence of Provost Alhaji Haruna Saidu-Sauwa and vandalizing his vehicle over allegations of extortion.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The unrest was triggered by claims that the college management had collected N23 million from 250 graduating students as part of an index registration fee. This fee increase was linked to the introduction of a Public Health program, which allegedly involved an additional demand of N65,000 from each student on top of the N30,000 already paid.
In response to the perceived injustices, students began stoning vehicles and ultimately set the provost’s house ablaze. As tensions heightened, college staff fled the scene, prompting the intervention of security forces to restore order.
Provost Saidu-Sauwa denied the allegations, labeling them as “fictitious and baseless.” He rejected claims that the new program was associated with any external body intending to exploit students, asserting that the institution operates under a Single Treasury Account system to ensure financial transparency. He suggested that the protests were driven by misinformation from unnamed individuals with ulterior motives.
He also challenged the anonymous accuser to provide evidence of their claims and called for patience as the true reasons behind the protest unfold. Saidu-Sauwa expressed relief that no injuries occurred during the incident and pledged to collaborate with security personnel to investigate those responsible for the unrest.
Following the intervention of security agencies, normalcy has returned to the college. SP Nafiu Abubakar, Public Relations Officer of the Kebbi State Police Command, confirmed that further details would be released after receiving a report from the Divisional Police Officer in Jega.
