The announcement aligns with the lunar Islamic calendar, where the sighting of the moon determines the start of each month. Sambo Junaidu, Chairman of the Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs at the Sultanate Council in Sokoto, confirmed in a statement on Friday that no reports of moon sighting were received by national moon sighting committees.

Muharram, commencing with the new moon, is among the four sacred months in the Islamic calendar and signifies the start of the new lunar year.

Junaidu explained, “No reports of the new moon of Muharram were received on Friday, 5th July, 2024, the 29th of Dhul’Hijja 1445 AH. Therefore, Saturday, 6th July, is the 30th of Dhul’Hijja.”

The Sultan extended greetings to Nigerian Muslims on the occasion of the new year, urging them to pray continually for peace, progress, and development across Nigeria.
