Super Eagles Star Benjamin Fredrick Makes Stunning Return After 287 Days Out

Super Eagles defender Benjamin Fredrick has made his long-awaited return to competitive football after spending 287 days on the sidelines with a knee injury.

The 21-year-old featured for 45 minutes as Brentford U-21 secured a commanding 5-1 victory over Sunderland U-21 in a Premier League 2 encounter on Monday. Fredrick started the game before being replaced by Ollie Shield at half-time.

According to Bush Radio Academy, Fredrick had been out of action since November 2025, when he sustained a knee injury during training with Belgian side FCV Dender EH, where he was playing on loan from Brentford.

Before suffering the injury, the young defender had represented Nigeria in the 2026 FIFA World Cup African play-offs, featuring for 120 minutes against both Gabon and DR Congo in Morocco.

His injury also prevented him from being part of Nigeria’s squad for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, where the Super Eagles eventually secured a bronze medal.

Fredrick first attracted significant attention following his impressive performances at the 2023 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Argentina. He subsequently earned his senior international debut and became part of the Super Eagles squad during Nigeria’s Unity Cup triumph in London before featuring in the World Cup qualifying campaign.

His return is expected to provide a major boost to Nigeria as the Super Eagles prepare for the upcoming 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers. Nigeria have been drawn in Group L alongside Madagascar, Tanzania and Guinea-Bissau.

Fredrick will now hope to build his fitness and regain his place in the senior national team ahead of the upcoming international fixtures.

Brentford U-21 are scheduled to return to action on September 8 when they travel to face Hull City in the Premier League Cup.
