Despite the escalation in Lassa fever cases, the NCDC emphasized a reduced fatality rate in comparison to the corresponding period the previous year.

In week 51 of 2023, the NCDC observed a noteworthy rise in newly confirmed Lassa fever cases, escalating from 10 cases in week 50 to 26 cases. These cases were documented in Bauchi, Ondo, Taraba, and Plateau States.

The cumulative data from week 1 to week 51 of 2023 revealed a total of 215 reported deaths, resulting in a case fatality rate of 17.5%. Notably, this figure is marginally lower than the recorded rate for the same period in 2022, which stood at 17.9%.

Throughout 2023, Lassa fever incidents were reported across 28 states, encompassing 121 Local Government Areas. Predominantly, 77% of the confirmed cases were concentrated in Ondo, Edo, and Bauchi States. Specifically, Ondo State reported 35% of the cases, Edo reported 28%, and Bauchi reported 14%.
